Release Date: 10/12/15

Summary from Goodreads:
Paranormal debut about a high school senior who finds herself in a fight with a secret society for control of ancient magic.

Julia never believed in magic.

Julia Long is starting her senior year with an extra dose of crazy. The dreams of cultish, bloody rituals are weird enough, but the victim in her lifelike dreams is her new classmate, Southern charmer Graham.

Graham admits he was part of the Phoenixes — a centuries old secret society — but swears he left it all behind. As Julia works with Graham to figure out why she is dreaming about his past, she’s discovering she has other abilities. She heals Graham’s migraines with a touch, and there’s her superhuman strength that comes and goes. Julia doesn’t know where her new talents come from, but there’s no denying that when Graham is near, her powers kick into overdrive.

But the Phoenixes want Graham back. They need his blood to awaken the magic they seek, and they’ll do whatever it takes to get it.

In a mundane world where magic does not exist, Julia is the only one with a shot at stopping them. Will Julia learn to control her new abilities in time to stop the Phoenixes from harnessing this powerful magic?

Sneak Peak

Our eyes met, and that was all it took for me to become lost in his heavy-lidded, crystal-blue eyes.
He turned to Clara and his face brightened. “Hey, Sis.” His voice was raspy like a smooth low buzz that set my insides humming.
“Graham, this is, Julia,” Clara said.
His lips turned up into a crooked grin, making heat rush to my cheeks. “Julia.” He nodded, reaching out to shake my hand and, although it was something Dad would do, I didn’t care. His Southern drawl was borderline hypnotic and sucked me in.
As he took my hand, my fingers tingled. Not the stomach dropping, sweaty, tongue-tied sensation you get from being around hot guys. Graham was definitely that hot. But no, this was different – a subtle prickling, like carbonated soda on the tongue. It tickled. We both looked down at our hands, eyes wide. The prickles crept up my arm, giving me goose bumps.
It was as if a current moved through us. My vision blurred and my legs weakened. Passing out became a serious possibility.
Was he doing something?
Then the sensation faded, replaced by a subtle wave of euphoria. Graham’s expression relaxed, and I finally remembered to let go.

Dream Cast

Who would I cast for Phoenix Awakens, the movie? I had to much fun searching for the perfect Julia and Graham. It should have been an easy question, but I’ll admit, it took me a while to find these photos.

Isabelle Fuhrman as Julia

dreamcast julia
Julia Long was a tough one to cast. I couldn’t think of anyone that looked like her. I finally found this photo of Isabelle Fuhrman, who played Clove in the Hunger Games. I love her hair, and she has the freckles and eyes too. The moment I saw this photo I knew she was perfect!

[A young] Zack Efron as Graham

dreamcast 2
Graham Morgan, the swoon-worthy southerner, was easier to cast. I see him as a young Zack Efron. Yes, finding a younger version of Zack would be impossible IRL, but this is my dream cast. And Zack is perfect!
I can totally see them together. They would make such an adorable couple! What do you guys think?

Author Q&A

  • Why do you write?
I’ve always had a really active imagination, and I love being able to share my stories.
  • What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?
I get home from work (my day job) and open my laptop every night for a few hours. If I’m under a deadline, I’ve been known to take vacation days from the day job and write all day, several days in a row.
  • What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
Hah! I guess we all have them. Sometimes I wear animal-ear headbands when I’m working on one of my manuscripts. It’s got a main character who’s a total quirk-job, so the animal ears help me get into her head when I write from her perspective.
  • Where do you get ideas for your books?
A story idea for me usually starts with a few characters and a setting in my mind. The next part is a lot of imagining possible scenarios and running the characters through them until I find out what the characters’ stories really are. Once I figure out their stories, I start to write.
  • Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Absolutely: Each one of us has magic hidden inside ourselves.
  • Name one entity that you feel supported you outside of family members.
There hasn’t been just one. My writing critique group is amazing. I love them. I also have wonderful support from the writing community on Twitter. It’s astonishing how much love you can get from 140 characters.
I also absolutely love readers and book bloggers, of course. Without your voracious appetite for fiction, I wouldn’t be able to share my stories.
  • Do you dream? Do you have any recurring dreams/nightmares?
I do! I love dreams. The dream world is so bendy and unreliable. What an exciting place to be! I had one dream that eventually turned into a novel length manuscript. I had another dream that was like an epic sci-fi trilogy played out before me. (I’m so bummed I didn’t write that one down!)
  • If you had a superpower, what would it be?
I’ve always wanted to fly. Alternately, I wouldn’t mind being able to eat as much Half-Baked Fro-Yo as I want without gaining weight. That would be an awesome superpower.
  • What are you working on at the minute?
I’m currently working on the sequel to Phoenix Awakens.
  • Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
    Yes. *waves frantically*
Hi! I’m so excited to share my story with you.
