My Review

I am a huge fan of Steampunk Fiction and will try almost any book that falls into that category. Some of them are not enjoyable but this one was well worth my time. We pick up where the first book left off and Maeko is now living life as a proper lady, or trying to and failing miserably.

I really like the author’s worldbuilding. Through her apt descriptions and attention to detail, one can easily visualise this Victorian London with its distinct separation of classes. As such, one is able to understand Maeko and her life on the streets as opposed to the life she is now trying her best to fit into.

Maeko is such a spunky character! No simpering, teary eyed simpleton of a heroine here! She is endowed with the necesary traits one would expect from a ‘street rat’; intuition,cunning, great powers of observation, quick feet, self defence strategies and a will to survive!

She is once again, caught up in the ongoing conspiracy and has to rely on her street smarts to get her out of tight spots with a little help from her partner in crime, Chaff. Her obervational qualities allow her to uncover details that eluded so many others. I find her character to be really likeable and couldn’t help but admire her tenacity, cleverness and penchant for geting into trouble!

• There is a brewing romance and a love triangle which I think captures the uncertainty of not only a teen on the cusp of womanhood but a “street rat’ uncertain whether to choose the familiar or the potentially more comfortable way of life.
• The suspense element is well done and the pacing is smooth and quick.
• The mystery is not very complex but it makes for a good read.
• There is enough intrigue woven throughout out to keep one invested and engrossed.

I would recomend this to fans of steampunk fiction and lovers of mystery.

About The Author

Nikki started writing her first novel at the age of 12, which she still has tucked in a briefcase in her home office, waiting for the right moment. Despite a successful short story publication with Cricket Magazine in 2007, she continued to treat her writing addiction as a hobby until a drop in the economy presented her with an abundance of free time that she used to focus on making it her career.

Nikki lives in the magnificent Pacific Northwest tending to her husband and three cats suffering varying stages of neurosis. She feeds her imagination by sitting on the ocean in her kayak gazing out across the never-ending water or hanging from a rope in a cave, embraced by darkness and the sound of dripping water.
