With the rift closed for the season and no more monsters to fight, Daelin Long gets bored as librarian in the podunk town of Settler, Oregon. A job interview and her brother’s arrival present a tempting opportunity to escape, until her brother and her best friend, a ghost, disappear.

While Daelin searches for them, more mysteries pile up: dead people coming back to life, portraits of the town founders replaced with strange white trees, and people on the other side of the rift returning. It’s impossible. The portal that allows monsters from other universes to come to Earth is sealed until next summer.

The Rifters, a secret group protecting our world, believe the troubles are nothing more than the tantrums of an offended ghost. Daelin disagrees. If she’s right, the evil hell-bent on destroying Earth has new technology making the rift more deadly.

Before the monster summons the next apocalypse, Daelin must find it and destroy it.

EXCERPT (Exclusive Excerpt):

Before Earl Blacke could say a word, a monolith rose from the floor of the otherworldly workshop in which gadgets, machines, and weapons were invented. The boundaries of the room couldn’t be detected by any human sense. Endless shelves filled with indefinable materials and tools surrounded a large open space dotted with experiments and work surfaces.

On the chiseled and gleaming planes of the monolith, a woman he cared about, Charming, appeared. Her thin lips twitched in her delicate face. “We’re running out of time. I’ll do whatever it takes to get my hands on the research. The knowledge will get us far, but we’ll need an army to go with it.” Her blue eyes were a mirror image of his, and a wild breeze whipped her hair, the color of strawberries, in front of them. She pulled her tresses away, keeping a grip on them, and blinked with such hope.

“A war, Charming?” He sighed, raking his fingers over his close-shaven beard. “Certainly with beings from other universes, there’s a different way to resolve our conflict.”

“The conflict is we exist. Do you propose we we kill ourselves before they do? War is what our adversaries want.” A hardness glinted in her gaze. It hadn’t been there when she left to save the world.

Earl admired her spunk, but she was so naive. How could she bet the future on a human-centered plan? Different universes couldn’t operate the way Earth did. If they did, Earl wanted no part in saving them. “If our enemy wants a war, it’s very good reason not to do it. No war, no need for an army.”

“There’s no avoiding the inevitable. Destruction will come through the rift and take out Earth. Stop being so pig-headed about it.” She rolled her eyes, harboring the innocence of youth. The rift hadn’t swallowed her whole yet. How long until it did?
