About the book:
Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels—magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books—rescue them from a demonic hound.

Jumping into some of the world’s most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren’t busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik’s world and her own, before both are destroyed.

My Review

As soon as I read the premise of this book in an Entangled Teen newsletter, I wanted to read it immediately. I love books about books or libraries and this one promised to be amazing.

I liked the manner in which Gia descovers her talent, such a coincidental way, and loved visiting various libraries (however brief) and really enjoyed the descriptions and the thrill from being able to travel  through books like she and the other sentinels do. I mean, how cool is that?

The worldbuilding is slow but easy to follow and the creatures and magical abilities are introduced over the course of the books instead of all at once which I liked. There is a diverse set of characters both magical and non magical and some of them were a really cool, fresh take on common creatures like vampires for example. The pacing was at times slow, but I think that was often necessary to explain certain things or set up a certain scene. When it does pick up though, the action is intense and fun.

I thought the characters were interesting for the most part and there are a couple revelations which brought a sub-character to the fore and I’m hoping to hear more about that in the next book. I loved Gia’s character. She is no wimp and I like her practical nature plus she’s a book lover! Hello!

The story for me got really intense and riveting in the last few chapters which were filled with action and complots, betrayals and back-stabbing and discovery. I loved getting to know Gia and this awesome world of sentinels and wizards and so many other creatures. It has left me curious and wanting more which is always good in my book.

Overall a good start to a series, and after that ending I can’t wait to see how Gia’s character develops and how the prophecy will play out. Any book that has piqued my interest so that I’m intrigued about what is to come, has scored in my opinion and Thief Of Lies has done just that!!

Author Bio

Brenda Drake Author Photo3Brenda Drake, the youngest of three children, grew up an Air Force brat and the continual new kid at school. Her fondest memories growing up is of her eccentric, Irish grandmother’s animated tales, which gave her a strong love for storytelling. So it was only fitting that she would choose to write stories with a bend toward the fantastical. When Brenda’s not writing or doing the social media thing, she’s haunting libraries, bookstores, and coffee shops or reading someplace quiet and not at all exotic (much to her disappointment).
