Zoey Daniels has been tossed from foster home to foster home, where she grows up fast and tough. When she is placed in her “last-chance” home, she finds a reason to stay and turn her life around: her foster sister, Lexie, who is paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. Zoey will do anything to keep her safe.

After high school, Zoey is hired by a special government agency, the Department of Molecular Genetics (DMG), where she meets the other reason to remain: Daniel, her co-worker. The man she loves.
But there is something unique about Zoey. She can see fae. Because of this, the DMG hires her to work as a Collector: catching, researching, testing, and using the fae to save human lives. The work never registers on her sympathy radar. She was raised to think of fae as beasts that feed on humans and want to destroy them.
When devastation hits Seattle, Zoey’s whole world is turned upside down. The electric storm connects her to a ruthless fae, a Wanderer named Ryker, whose dealings expose them to even more trouble and danger. They embark on a journey, running and hiding from both the government and fae, both of which threaten their lives and those they love.

Welcome to this week’s Super Middle Grade Mondays Book Blitz presented by Tantrum Books/Month9books.Today, we get up close and personal with Donna Galanti author of Joshua and the Lightning Road from Tantrum Books. Be sure to enter the giveaway found at the end of the post!

Donna Galanti

Donna Galanti attended an English school housed in a magical castle, where her wild imagination was held back only by her itchy uniform (bowler hat and tie included!). There she fell in love with the worlds of C.S. Lewis and Roald Dahl, and wrote her first fantasy about Dodo birds, wizards, and a flying ship. She’s lived in other exotic locations, including Hawaii where she served as a U.S. Navy photographer. She now lives with her family and two crazy cats in an old farmhouse, and dreams of returning one day to a castle. Donna is the author of the Joshua and The Lightning Road series (Month9Books) and blogs at Project Mayhem. Visit her at www.donnagalanti.com.

Would You Rather Questions by Donna Galanti

Would you rather never be able to speak again or always have to say everything that is on your mind?
Never have to speak again! If others knew all my crazy thoughts, I might not have any friends or family left. Ha ha! At least I could still write. J

Would you rather be able to read or be able to read minds (but be illiterate)?
Read, absolutely! To read means to explore other worlds, create movies in your mind, find deeper meaning in life, experience self-awareness, and go through transformations. I would be afraid to read minds to see truly what people are thinking. I definitely do not want to know what goes on in many people’s heads (especially my son’s)! Besides, it’s more fun to imagine what is in other people’s heads and create character stories about them to entertain myself.

Would you rather be able to speak fluently every language in the world or be the best in the world at something of your choosing?
Be the best in the world at…playing the violin! I can challenge myself to learn new languages, but I’ve always dreamed of having musical talent – and I adore the violin. Writing and music go hand in hand for me and I want to play and inspire myself, and others.

Would you rather read only one book over and over for the rest of your life or read as many as you want but never remember what they’re about?

What a terrible dilemma! As many as I want. Even if I don’t remember them, at least I can experience new worlds through them in the moment.

Would you rather only the first page of a book or the last page?
Definitely the last page! I have a habit of flicking to the back and reading the last line of a book I pick up to possibly buy. If that last line pulls me in and connects to the first line then I am good to get it!

Would you rather read 5 pages per day or 5 books per week?

5 pages per day. I am a speed reader and if I were to read 5 books a week, I know I would skim them and not get the full experience each one. To read 5 pages a day I could immerse myself in the story, slowly, and reflect on it and its journey.

Would you rather read only one genre forever or never read the same genre more than once?
I would rather never read the same genre more than once. I lost my love of reading when I became an author and couldn’t figure out why. Then a friend made me aware that as an author I now needed to expand what I read. She was right! I had always read the same one or two genres and had simply gotten bored. Now I like to sink into books that challenge me in new ways, to read things I never would have before: non-fiction, science fiction, historical, horror, etc. In reading across genres it helps me expand my skills as an author and also brings a richness to my own writing.

Would you rather be invisible or be able to read minds?
Invisible! Then I could sneak around and grab private conversations of people to churn my brain with ideas for stories! (a spy but for educational purposes, of course).

Would you rather never use the internet again or never watch TV again?
That’s easy. TV. I am not much of a TV watcher – and could always catch up on my favorite shows on the internet through Netflix.

Would you rather have one wish granted today or three granted in 10 years?
Definitely three in ten years. My desires and needs may change across the years. Something I desire today, may not work out for tomorrow!

Would you rather know it all or have it all?
Have it all. If you have it all, that’s wonderful to not worry about material things and still explore the world to seek knowledge and meaning – and know it’s a vast, never ending tide of information. But if you know it all, what left is there to discover? Life would be very boring. There would be no challenges! No amazing discoveries! No transformations! It would be a life without curiosity and that would be a very sad life indeed.

Joshua-Cover

Stay away from the window, don’t go outside when it’s storming and whatever you do, do not touch the orb.

Twelve-year-old Joshua Cooper’s grandpa has always warned him about the dangers of lightning. Then one night, when Joshua and his best friend are home alone during a frightful storm, Joshua learns his grandpa was right. A bolt of lightning strikes his house and whisks away his best friend—possibly forever.

To get him back, Joshua must travel the Lightning Road to a dark place that steals children for energy. But getting back home and saving his friend won’t be easy, as Joshua must face the terrifying Child Collector and fend off ferocious and unnatural beasts intent on destroying him.

Emma AdamsAbout the Author:
Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing speculative fiction. She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. She also entertained her creative writing group and baffled her tutors by submitting strange fantasy tales featuring dragons and supernatural monsters to workshops. These included her first publication, a rather bleak dystopian piece, and a disturbing story about a homicidal duck (which she hopes will never see the light of day).

Now a reluctant graduate, Emma refuses to settle down and be normal. When not embarking on wild excursions and writing fantasy novels, she edits and proofreads novels for various publishing houses and reads an improbable number of books. Emma is currently working on the Alliance series, a multiple-universe adult fantasy featuring magic, monsters, cool gadgets and sarcasm. Her upper-YA urban fantasy Darkworld series is published by Curiosity Quills Press.

Landlord & Full Time Writer.

Which writers inspire you?

Edgar Allan Poe, Sylvia Plath, Stephen King, John Grisham, C.S. Lewis, Charles Dickens, Peter Benchley, William Peter Blatty, J.M. Barrie & James Herbert. Oh, of course, Shakespeare.

What is your writing process like?

I see visual images in my mind’s eye very vividly. It’s like I mentally walk into a dark movie theatre in my mind, an old 1920’s movie theatre and sit alone in the middle of a gigantic room amidst hundreds of empty seats. The cinema screen is blank (white) until the projector begins to play a movie. It is the movie that would entertain, thrill and touch me emotionally and I simply write down what I see.

What are you reading right now?

Lord Of The Flies by William Golding.

Do you have an author crush?

No. Not really. Haha. Stephenie Meyer, maybe? Yeah, I’ll go with Stephenie. Which is weird because I don’t like the mainstream.

Prologue

HE LEANED AGAINST the wall, studying the bare table before him. The surface was white, smooth, and looked entirely uncomfortable. How would it feel to wake up on such a thing? He couldn’t imagine it being pleasant, but then she’d dealt with worse than lying on a cold surface. Frowning, he wondered if she was scared to come here or if she was entirely fearless as she closed her dark eyes—eyes that he’d seen burn with determination—only to open them to an unknown beginning.
Staying perfectly still, he was unable to look at anything but the emptiness. How long had he been waiting? How long had he been trained to the same fixture? The answer didn’t matter. He would never miss this. He promised her he’d be here, promised he’d never let anything happen to her. A promise he failed to keep with someone else.
“Dev, you can wait outside,” said a soft feminine voice. “You don’t need to stand around counting the seconds. I’m sure you have responsibilities you are neglecting.”
“If I leave, I would be neglecting my greatest responsibility,” Dev said evenly.
Elena sat on the other side of the room, a small smile touching her features. She wore the traditional white robe of the Vigil elders, and her posture was straight but relaxed. Her composure was something that always, ironically, unnerved him.
“Does she return these feelings?”
At her disruptive question, Dev snatched his eyes away from his target and latched on to another. She regarded him collectedly, like she did all things, with an expression that suggested she had seen into his future, flickered through his past, and held his current desires, wondering how much he might know of them.
He stayed silent, both unwilling and unsure how to answer.
“I must speak freely,” she went on. “I am both happy and saddened by your situation.”
His brows pinched in. “What do you mean?”
She tilted her head curiously, looking straight into his soul, and he did his best to seem calm, to not show how her ominous eyes affected him. Terra only knew how her guards dealt with being around her so much.
“I see your path as one that forks. As to which road you follow, that is still to be determined.”
Dev breathed out a laugh. “Aren’t most things in life still to be determined?”
“Perhaps for some.”
“Well then, is it safe to assume the cliché that one of these roads is happy and the other sad?” he asked, quickly growing tired of this vague game of prophecies.
“That all depends.”
“On what?”
She regarded him evenly. “On her.” She paused for a moment. “And on you.”
“Me?”
She nodded.
“How?”
Elena smoothed a nonexistent wrinkle from her dress. “I think the more important question is whether your heart is willing to sacrifice again to find out?”
Dev’s stomach tightened, and he dropped his eyes back to the empty table. Memories he’d buried deep within the ocean of time suddenly gasped for the surface, but he smothered them quickly. A shiver of past regret clicked down his spine. But that’s all it was, the past, and it could no longer bar him from having a future. Is your heart willing to sacrifice again?
He swallowed. “Was it ever willing?”
Elena stayed silent, allowing his question to echo through the room, and after a moment, Dev went back to staring at nothing and waiting for everything.

she who has the locket-keepsake

Quote:

I have the third locket, Sisi. It holds the truth. The truth in your heart. You must find it and hold it dear.”

Excerpt:

When I open the locket, there’s a bolt of sadness that stabs me, then clings to my skin, making me feel like I’ve trespassed somewhere I shouldn’t have. If there really is some sort of power coming from this thing, we should return it. Only, with Dr. Greta over in Germany, and having stolen the diary a whole month ago, we’d both be in crazy trouble. Especially Cory, given that he’s already got two strikes against him with the juvenile authorities and MIPs and stuff like that.
The diary is hidden under a loose board behind my bookcase. Once we found out that my shrink had been summoned to return it to the authorities, Cory suggested that we stash it. It’s been a couple of days since I checked it, and now, with our new suspicions about the locket, I want to revisit that passage about the keepsake’s magic. Only, I need Cory to translate Sisi’s German.
The bookcase scrapes the floor a little when I shove it forward. The entire wall is made of wood—not one sheet of drywall in this old place—and Cory had pried loose a short panel of fir where it meets the baseboard molding. That’s where I find the empress journal pages crammed into one the binding of my last shrink-sponsored food diary. My heartbeat competes with the storm as I wiggle it free and tiptoe across the hall.
I find Cory already asleep, buried in his sleeping bag in the screened-in summer porch. The diary and locket feel heavy in my hands; my nerves are jangling as I approach his burrito-wrapped body. “Cory,” I loud-whisper.
He snorts and turns over, facing away from me.
“Wake up!”
Cory pops his face out. “Dude, you’re totally interrupting my amazing dream.”
For Cory, an amazing dream probably has to do with his mouth over a bong, or some girl-related activity, and I don’t want the details. I hold out the journal, “We need to get to the bottom of this.”
Cory sits up and rubs his eyes. Another crack of thunder, this one right over us. I settle in close to him. I seem to be shivering, all of a sudden.
“What, you’re scared of a little storm, Lizzie?”
“Don’t call me that.”
He holds his arm out, his chin gestures toward his shoulder, “Come here.”
I scootch in closer, his warm body heating me instantly, taking the shiver away. His arm settles around my shoulder and I open the diary, the loose pages of ancient text shift away from the decoy cover, and I hold them tight to keep them from blowing away as another gust of wind swoops in.
As I page through it, looking for that place where Cory had translated Sisi’s entries about love and visions and magic, the image of Alika gets clearer. Alika and Cory, together on that bridge. I keep turning the worn, yellowed pages, trying to ignore the intrusion of thoughts of Cory close to another girl, but the vision is very strong. Overpowering. Rain spits at us. Wind blows and whistles through the screen. I toss the locket to the far end of the sleeping bag, down near where the rain has trickled and pooled on the floor. And just as I hear the clink of the keepsake sliding to the floor, Cory shouts, “Liz, look at this!”

Phoenix Awakensphoenix awakens
by Eliza Nolan
Release Date: 10/12/15

Summary from Goodreads:
Paranormal debut about a high school senior who finds herself in a fight with a secret society for control of ancient magic.

Julia never believed in magic.

Julia Long is starting her senior year with an extra dose of crazy. The dreams of cultish, bloody rituals are weird enough, but the victim in her lifelike dreams is her new classmate, Southern charmer Graham.

Graham admits he was part of the Phoenixes — a centuries old secret society — but swears he left it all behind. As Julia works with Graham to figure out why she is dreaming about his past, she’s discovering she has other abilities. She heals Graham’s migraines with a touch, and there’s her superhuman strength that comes and goes. Julia doesn’t know where her new talents come from, but there’s no denying that when Graham is near, her powers kick into overdrive.

But the Phoenixes want Graham back. They need his blood to awaken the magic they seek, and they’ll do whatever it takes to get it.

In a mundane world where magic does not exist, Julia is the only one with a shot at stopping them. Will Julia learn to control her new abilities in time to stop the Phoenixes from harnessing this powerful magic?

Exclusive Sneak Peak:

I rush down the wooded path as fast as I can. My legs throb and my lungs burn as I push forward through the night.
I should be heading in the other direction, away from danger, but my survival instinct is overpowered by an even deeper need. A need so primal I can’t name it; I only feel its pull and have to obey.
A man’s yell cuts through the forest. I race even faster towards the bloodcurdling sound.
But when I get there, it’s too late. I hide behind a tree at the edge of the clearing.
Light from a bonfire illuminates a group of men in hooded cloaks. At their feet kneels a teenage boy. He’s wearing jeans and nothing else. Blood drips down his chest from fresh cuts. One of the men stands over him, a bloody knife in his hand. The boy wavers on his knees and collapses to the ground. The others move away, leaving him where he lies, motionless.
The shuffle of their feet fades as they head towards the swamp.
The only sound left is the racing thump, thump of my heart, so loud I’m sure all the creatures in the forest can hear. I tiptoe out into the clearing and, seeing no one else, rush over to the guy. Still breathing, he is curled up in a ball on the ground. His body is covered in a mixture of dirt and his own blood. So much blood!
“Hey.” My voice comes out in an unsteady whisper. “Are you okay?”
He turns to face me and I startle when I recognize him.
My hands shake as I reach out to him. I brush his shoulder with my fingertips and sharp pain shoots through them and up my arm. It’s like a million pin pricks at once.
I jerk my hand away, crying out.

Author Q&A

Which writers inspire you?
I grew up reading Stephen King. I love his books. But I didn’t start writing until I read Twilight. Stephanie Meyer’s story really clicked with me. I found myself wishing I’d had something like that to read when I was in high school. Swoony paranormal guys? Yes please!

When did you decide to become a writer?
In October of 2009 I heard about International Novel Writing Month (every November). I’d just finished reading the Twilight series and thought writing a novel sounded like fun. The book I started writing that November was the very rough first draft of Phoenix Awakens.
Shortly after I finished the first draft, I realized I wanted to make writing more than just a hobby. I’ve spent the last several years working on my craft.

Did you learn anything from writing your book?
Since Phoenix Awakens was my first, I had to learn how to write. Seriously, my first draft was so awful that I wouldn’t even show it to my cat.

What does your writing process look like?
It’s always changing; no two books write the same. I had no idea how Phoenix Awakens was going to end when I started writing it. Since then I’ve done a bit more work with outlines. Each story has its own process. The trick for me is to figure out what the process is for each story, and then go through that process so that I can find the story and share it.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
I’ve written three full-length books, and have two partially written. I know I should say they are all my children and I love them equally–I actually do really love all my stories a ton–but my favorite is Phoenix Awakens. It’s always been my baby, and I’m insanely excited to finally share it!

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
No way. I’ve had some ups and downs, but the story is what it is because of those ups and downs. I wouldn’t change a thing.

What is your next project?
I would like to write more in the Phoenix series. I also have a contemporary young adult in draft form, and a post-apocalyptic story. I’ve always got a few things going.
