My Review

Wow! Just Wow! Stormwielder has all the tried and true elements of fantasy which if done right scores time and time again with readers and which I am always excited to find when reading fantasy.

We have a young man with powers that he is afraid of, yet he has to learn how to harness before he destroys everything and eveyone who crosses paths with him.
Burdened with guilt, after incinerating a whole village, with bounty hunters on his trail, he is thankful that magicker Alistair found him before they do, for he will need his training if he is to control that beast called magic, which resides within him and would be master if it could, to the detriment of him and everyone around him!

I loved the elements of magic present in Stormwielder; that they’re linked to the elements, and how its wielded by the characters. Demons and dragons also make appearances which adds to that dark element that I love in fantasy and kicks the awesome factor up a notch.

The main character is Erik whose character development was interesting to see unfold as the story progressed. He went from being a young, insecure, uncertain man afraid of his magic and thinking it a curse, to one who becomes one with his magic is and is able to control it to an extent where he can now use itin defence of innocents.

The author writing style is perfect for keeping the reader engaged due to it being easy to read and well-paced; slower when necessary for worldbuilding/character development and fast-paced for action-scenes.  I especially loved that Hodges uses just the right amount of detailing to keep the novel imaginative and captivating without overwhelming the reader with mindless info-dumping. This, combined with his creative  storytelling capabilities makes Stormbringer a page-turner.

Overall, a really great fantasy with dark twists, intrigue, a dash of romance and a riveting plot to keep you turning the pages until the end.

Title: ASSASSIN’S HEART Assassin's heart
Author: Sarah Ahiers
Release Date: February 2, 2016
Pages: 400
Publisher: HarperTeen
Formats: Hardcover, eBook, audiobook
Find it: Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes & Noble | iBooks

In the kingdom of Lovero, nine rival Families of assassins lawfully kill people for a price. As a highly skilled member of one of these powerful clans, seventeen-year-old Lea Saldana has always trusted in the strength of her Family. Until she awakens to find them murdered and her home in flames. The Da Vias, the Saldanas’ biggest enemy, must be responsible—and Lea should have seen it coming. But her secret relationship with the Da Vias’ son, Val, has clouded her otherwise killer instinct—and given the Da Vias more reason than ever to take her Family down.

Racked with guilt and shattered over Val’s probable betrayal, Lea sets out to even the score, with her heart set on retaliation and only one thought clear in her mind: make the Da Vias pay.

With shades of The Godfather and Romeo and Juliet, this richly imagined fantasy from debut author Sarah Ahiers is a story of love, lies, and the ultimate vengeance.

My Review

Assassin’s Heart is a story of love and family, betrayal, revenge and redemption, set in the city of Lovero, where the God of Death, is worshipped by her disciples, the nine assassin families. They have the unorthodox privelege of being able to execute persons as a way of life with Safraella’s blessing.

The main protaganist Oleander (Lea) Saldana’s family is number one but this spot is a precarious one as their family and future has been decimated by the recent plague. Lea has a secret; she is in a relationship with someone from a rival family, the Da Vias with whom they share a territory, Ravenna. This family also has some bad history with the Saldana’s and the matriarch of the Da Vias has never forgotten. Being the richest of all the nine families they are primed to take down the Da Vias and would like nothing but to see them fall, and they make sure they do this in a particularly brutal manner designed to leave no survivors but Lea escapes and laden with guilt that her forbidden relationship might have been the instrument of thier destruction , she  vows revenge for her slain family.

This story was so addictive and read like a twisted Romeo and Juliet with with some elements of the Godfather and I absolutely loved it. Lea Saldana was a particulary interesting character. She was not in the least squeamish or regretful about taking lives in her line of work and comes off as being very capable , fearless and cocky in the beginning.

After the tragedy, a new side of her emerges. She is fearful and anxious which just humanised her in my eyes. I loved her determination and stubborness which was necessary if she was to survive. She was quite arrogant and full of herself but I could understand that after having taken so many lives at such a young age, that one could feel invincible and with the backing of her God and her conviction, self righteous.

The unique concept of a world where an assassin was allowed to go about their jobs without fear of repercusssion was fascinating althout I dare say i wouldn’t want to live there. I felt the end was quite appropriate and most of the loose ends were neatly tied up and I loved the lack of a cliffhanger in this.

Overall, a riveting imaginative storyline complemented by well-developed , believable characters, with dark twists and romantic  innuendos guaranteed to capture your interest and keep you glued to the pages, regretting that it has to come to an end.

Goodreads Summary:

When the snarky Glory St. Pierre discovers the gold mechanical vase in her deceased grandmother’s basement, she has no idea that she has uncovered a priceless treasure: a genie lamp. With a real genie inside. A very sexy genie with a not-so-sexy grudge against the entire human race.

Irving Amir hates being called a genie. He’s a Djinn, and he is none too happy to be in the service of Glory, who is as intolerable, and beautiful, as humans come. Now he owes her his gratitude for freeing him and three wishes. Damn his luck.

But an arrow through the shoulder alerts Irving to the fact that he is being hunted, and after a truce dinner with Glory ends with them both almost being killed, hating each other goes right out the window. As feelings change and love starts to develop, they must dig through the secrets and lies to find the truth…a truth neither of them will ever see coming.

WARNING: Not suitable for ages 18 and under. A significant source of bad language, sexy times, and dirty jokes. If you suffer from a lack of a sense of humor, take with plenty of wine. If the symptom persists, see a doctor.

Wish Teaser 3.png

My Review

Wish For Me was a fun, light read with an interesting storyline  and a Djinn to die for, totally swoonworthy!!

The main character, Molly, is a a 19 year old college student who is at a stage in her life where she just wants to get good grades and have fun. Cleaning out her lately departed granny’s attic was not how she would classify fn but it did lead to a surprising find, a Chronolier (genie lamp), which came with a key 9no rubbing necessary). Said key unlocks the clockwork which opens a portal to the Djinn’s world, Shrinelyn, and out comes Irving, not too pleased to be there, to grant three wishes. Things just get heated (fans self) and interesting from there.

Now, I’m not a huge romance fan, and some of the dialogue and scenes were a bit corny, but it was done in a humourous way, and I soon grew accustomed and accepting of the banter.

Although the brewing romance was predominant at first, political intrigue and action soon comes into play, and that’s what sold this story for me. Some eye-opening revelations totally surprised me and a twist that I never saw coming and I’m usually pretty good at guessing these.

If you’re lookng for a fun, humour filled, romantic fantasy with characters you will love and be annoyed with at the same time . with a splash of intrigue and action and a hint of secrets waiting to be unveiled, then this is the book for you. Be aware, strong language and explicit scenes abound!

The Uprising Teaser 2

Exclusive Excerpt

Hot showers, beds that conform to my body, soft clothes, public transportation — there’s a shitload of stuff to love about the Union, but by far my favorite is the beach. I never tire of watching the ocean, struggling to understand it, the way it seems to go on forever. Standing here, feeling the coarse sand beneath my feet and the cool mist on exposed skin, helps me think.

Like an idiot, I figured nothing else mattered as long as Evan and I were together, but every damn thing matters. It’s not safe to stay here, and it’s not safe to return to the Ruins. Not that she’d even agree to that. Hell, I don’t know what she wants. We barely talk and I know that’s mostly on me. I can’t pretend her sleeping with that douche doesn’t piss me off. I want to punch something every time I see him, which is pretty much every fucking day.

“Figured I’d find you here,” Rainey’s raspy voice comes from behind me.

I grit my teeth and turn to face her. “Hey.”

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

“Yeah. Never thought I’d see the ocean, now I can’t seem to leave.”

She’s quiet for a few moments, staring out at the crashing waves. I’ve stared at them for plenty of hours myself, now I stare at her. She’s pretty, in a rough sort of way. The scar running from her ear to her jaw only enhances her looks. But she’s not someone you’d ever want to mess with.

“Quit staring at me.”

I turn back to the water. “Sorry.”

“Colin went with her. You know, in case you were wondering.”

“Not really.” I wasn’t, only because I chose not to think about it. But if it’d been Bryce, I’d have needed to pound something.

“Are you going to punish her forever?”

Dragging my gaze away from the surf, I glare at her. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Her eyebrows go up. “Really? You two were this sappy sweet, gag-inducing couple until her ex showed up. Now you’re always in a foul mood, and you barely talk to the girl you supposedly gave up everything to follow.”

“Fine, I don’t like the guy, never have. Why the hell is he here again?”

“We need everyone if we have any hope of doing what you’re planning. We can’t send him packing because he got naked and horizontal with your girl.”

If Rainey wasn’t a girl, I’d have no problem decking her, but she is, so I walk down to the water to get away from her.

Whatever went on between Evan and the douchebag was before she joined the Uprising, but it’s more than that. It’s everything. She had no idea what she was getting herself into and no plan to get out. She nearly got herself killed.

She’s impulsive and reckless, and I don’t know if I can deal with that.

EXCERPT:

Prologue

I STUFFED THE SLEEPING BAG down into my backpack with angry, punching motions, sick and tired of having to be here and having to do the same thing over and over again. I hated camping, I hated being organized, and more than anything, I hated what this exercise stood for.

“Don’t do it like that. I told you – you have to conserve the room as best you can. You have to travel as efficiently as possible. Take it out and start over.”

“I don’t see what difference it makes.”

“Trust me, it’s going to be a really big deal to you in the not so distant future.” His voice sounded hollow.

“Says who?” I was being ornery. I knew the answer to the question already.

“Says me, Bryn. And the news. Look around, would you?” He sounded like he was pleading now. “Stop defaulting back to the rebellious young teen act, and get serious. We don’t have enough time to play those games anymore.”

“They’re not games, Dad. I am a teenager. I don’t care what the news jerks and the government say.” I threw my backpack down on the ground. “And it’s not rebellious to not want to play friggin’ survivor in the backyard every day.”

My dad looked at me with a sad expression and sighed, reaching over to pull me into a tight hug. He dropped his nose to my head and inhaled deeply.

My face was pressed up against his shirt, and I could smell his sweat mixed with the sweet scent of his aftershave. My dad always said he was the last of a dying breed, using that stuff. He couldn’t have been more right.

“Maybe it’s not going to happen here … to us.” I said it just to hear the words, but I knew it was only wishful thinking.

I could tell he was getting choked up again when he started talking, his voice now hoarse.

“I wish, more than anything else in this world, that you didn’t have to be standing here with me in this backyard playing survivor.” His whole body started to shake with silent sobs. “Oh, God, Bryn. If I could do anything to change this, anything at all, I would. I swear to God I would. But it’s happening. No one can stop it.”

I put my arms around his waist, letting go of my earlier stubborn anger, now choking back my own tears. “I know, Dad. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it.”

“Yes, you did,” he said, sniffing hard and clearing his throat, shifting to hold me at arm’s length. He was staring at me while he smiled through his tears, giving me that look. The one that always made me confess.

“Okay, so maybe I did mean it. But I’ll shut up about it for a little while.”

“Not for too long, though. You wouldn’t be my daughter if you weren’t complaining about something.”

I tried to slap him playfully but he moved too fast for me. My dad is light on his feet, an expert level-one practitioner of krav maga – a certified badass. He’d only recently taken up camping.

“Pick it up,” he ordered, now back in control of his emotions. “Do it again. Only this time, get the air out of that bag first, condense it down …”

I cut him off. “I know, I know … ‘down into the smallest footprint possible.’ Geez, Dad, I’m not an idiot.”

I shook the sleeping bag out and started rolling it up quickly, using the moves I’d been practicing for four months straight to squeeze it down into a lump the size of a small loaf of bread. I folded the whole thing in half, pushed it to the bottom of the backpack, and then let it unfold itself one time, before putting the other items in on top of it: unbreakable water bottle, half-liter of bleach, square of plastic, cup, hunting knife, and various other tools my father was quite certain I would need … once all the adults in the world had died off, leaving us kids alone to fend for ourselves.

#T4T Book Blitz: Serpentine by Cindy Pon & Nameless by Jennifer Jenkins

Welcome to this week’s Two for Thursday! #T4T presented by Month9books/Tantrum Books! Today, we will be showcasing two titles that will tickle your
fancy, and we’ll share what readers have to say about these titles!
You just might find your next read!

This week, #T4T presents to you:

SERPENTINE is a sweeping fantasy set in the ancient Kingdom of Xia and inspired by the rich history of Chinese mythology.

Lush with details from Chinese folklore, SERPENTINE tells the coming of age story of Skybright, a young girl who worries about her growing otherness. As she turns sixteen, Skybright notices troubling changes. By day, she is a companion and handmaid to the youngest daughter of a very wealthy family. But nighttime brings with it a darkness that not even daybreak can quell.

When her plight can no longer be denied, Skybright learns that despite a dark destiny, she must struggle to retain her sense of self – even as she falls in love for the first time.

“Vivid worldbuilding, incendiary romance, heart-pounding action, and characters that will win you over–I highly recommend Serpentine.” Cinda Williams Chima, best-selling author of the Seven Realms and Heir Chronicles fantasy novels

“Serpentine is unique and surprising, with a beautifully-drawn fantasy world that sucked me right in! I love Skybright’s transformative power, and how she learns to take charge of it.” ~Kristin Cashore, NYT Bestseller of the Graceling Realm Series
“Serpentine’s world oozes with lush details and rich lore, and the characters crackle with life. This is one story that you’ll want to lose yourself in.” ~ Marie Lu, New York Times bestselling author of Legend and The Young Elites

WHAT READER’S ARE SAYING:

“Serpentine is a beautifully written, diverse book with a unique mythology that isn’t common place in YA books, which is sad to say. We need more books like this one~ Katie Blogger @ Mundie Moms

“Cindy introduces us to a story that is steeped in Chinese mythology. For me, that was a refreshing break from the Greco-Roman and Egyptian mythologies I studied in school. Although, the world-building was something new to me, the story itself was very familiar. SERPENTINE is a journey of discovery — discovering who you are and how you fit into a destiny. That’s a plot I will never get tired of reading, especially since Cindy presents it so well.” ~ Sophie Blogger @ PageTurners

“Cindy Pon captures your imagination with beautifully written world building and freshly dynamic characters. You will find yourself completely engulfed in this world of Chinese mythology and fascinating worlds.” ~ReadingTeen

Four clans have been at war for centuries: the Kodiak, the Raven, the Wolf and the Ram. Through brutal war tactics, the Ram have dominated the region, inflicting death and destruction on their neighbors. Seventeen-year-old Zo is a Wolf and a Healer who volunteers to infiltrate the Ram as a spy on behalf of the allied clans. She offers herself as a Ram slave, joining the people who are called the “nameless.” Hers is a suicide mission – Zo’s despair after losing her parents in a Ram raid has left her seeking both revenge and an end to her own misery. But after her younger sister follows her into Rams Gate, Zo must find a way to survive her dangerous mission and keep her sister safe. What she doesn’t expect to find is the friendship of a young Ram whose life she saves, the confusing feelings she develops for a Ram soldier, and an underground nameless insurrection. Zo learns that revenge, loyalty and love are more complicated than she ever imagined in the first installment of this two-book series.

WHAT READER’S ARE SAYING:
“Wow….WOW, WOW, WOW! I have no words to describe how much I love this book. Jenkins writes characters who are just so easy to love, and when you love a character it makes the book so much better. And I loved all the characters. Zo, Tess, Joshua and Gryphon. Gryphon is definitely my favorite – but who wouldn’t love Gryphon? Of course I do have a soft spot for our heroine, Zo.” ~Bri,
Blogger @ Once Upon A Twilight

“Nameless destroyed me in the best way possible. The romance was subtle, but written beautifully. The plot was very intriguing and the pacing was spot on. I loved the entire cast of characters, every single one of them added to the story. Trust me when I say you should preorder it, add it to your TBR, request it from your library, do whatever you have to do to get this book in your hands because if you are a YA fantasy fan like me you need this book in your life!” ~ Bridget, Blogger @ Dark Faerie Tales

“NAMELESS is epic storytelling at its best. My mind is still reeling from the world that I have just been immersed in and I don’t want to leave it. Can I please have the sequel NOW? Because I need to know what happens next but in the meantime I’m just going to re-read it again and again. Is it that good, you may ask? Hell yes!!! And you will think so too. Trust me.” Nancy, Blogger @ Tales of A Ravenous Reader

“To say that I love this book is an understatement. It completely blew me away! I am so happy that I took a chance on it. NAMELESS is one book that you can re-read over and over again and it will still feel fresh! I cannot wait for the world to read it and fall under the NAMELESS spell. Because that’s what I feel like I am under, a spell that has me trapped in Zo’s world and won’t let me out! I don’t want out!”~Damaris, Blogger @ Good Choice Reading

“Wow this one was addictive!! For fans of An Ember in the Ashes, Under the Never Sky, and The Winner’s Curse, Nameless captured my attention and held it until the very end. Quick read. Slowburn romance. Great world-buildling. Awesome plot.” ~ Rachel Blogger @ A Perfection Called Books

“From the start of the story until the very last page, Jennifer Jenkins took me on an emotional ride. Through action, and heartbreak, and healing and relationships forming out of hatred and mistrust, she has created a story of hope and faith and choosing how you want to live your life, and the beliefs that you want to hold, regardless of others around you.” ~ Jaime Blogger @ The Best Books Ever

“Fantasy fans, do not miss out on this epic new series. It’s got everything that you could ever possibly want out of a all-consuming fantasy book: fierce characters, twisty plot, stunning world building, captivating prose and my favorite, a romance that will make you want to shout out your love for the couple at the top of your lungs. Do yourself a favor, and buy this book right away.” Nick,
Blogger @ Nicks Book Blog

“Electrifying and intense and instantly and completely captivating, NAMELESS is one of those reads that will make you race through the pages to find out what’s going to happen next. With a fascinating new world to discover, one that is primitive, harsh, brutal, and intriguing new characters to meet who are fierce and determined and deadly, some of whom are cruel and others who are compassionate, you will be immediately pulled into the story and you’ll never want the journey to end.” ~ Rachel blogger @ Fiktshun
